A health worker knowledge, attitudes and practices survey of SARS-CoV-2 infection prevention and control in South Africa

Abstract Background Health workers are crucial to the successful implementation of infection prevention and control strategies limit transmission SARS-CoV-2 at healthcare facilities. The aim our study was determine knowledge attitudes frontline health in four provinces South Africa as well explore some elements worker facility practices. Methods A cross-sectional design utilised. population comprised both clinical non-clinical staff working casualty departments, outpatient entrance points structured self-administered questionnaire developed using World Organization guidance basis for questions. COVID-19 protocols were observed during data collection. Results total 286 from 47 facilities different levels care participated survey. mean score on 10 items 6.3 (SD = 1.6). Approximately two-thirds participants (67.4%) answered six or more questions correctly while less than a quarter all (24.1%) managed eight more. 8 significantly associated with occupational category (being either medical doctor nurse), age (< 40 years) level hospital (tertiary level). Only half (50.7%) felt adequately prepared deal patients COVD-19 time displaying that would put themselves others risk minority. 55.6% had received training. Some indicated they did not have access masks (11.8%) gloves (9.9%) their departments. Conclusions reflected willingness engage appropriate practices commitment be involved patient care. Ensuring adequate training universal PPE identified key areas needed addressed. Interim final reports which shortcomings addressed provided relevant provincial departments health.
